What is About Coquitlam BC?

Coquitlam is a city in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Coquitlam, mainly a suburban city, is the sixth-largest city in the province with a population of 139,284 in 2016. Mainly a young family-oriented community, Coquitlam is the child of a merger between the small, neighboring towns of Maillardville, Coquitlam, and Fraser Mills in the mid-1960s.

Coquitlam is bordered to the west by the Fraser River, to the north by the cities of Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, to the east by the cities of Burnaby and New Westminster, and to the south by the city of Port Coquitlam. Coquitlam is bounded on the south west by the Coquitlam River opposite Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

Coquitlam is the 13th-largest city in Metro Vancouver and forms part of a Greater Vancouver Regional District urban center named the Tri-Cities. The name "Coquitlam" comes from the Indigenous people, the Kwikwetlem First Nation, of the coast Salish peoples.

Coquitlam is the commercial core of the Tri-Cities and was ranked as the 35th best place to live in Canada by MoneySense magazine in 2006 and again in 2010. The Kwikwetlem are a Coast Salish First Nation band whose ancestral home is on the lower slopes of Eagle Mountain in Coquitlam. Their name is a Coast Salish term meaning "red fish up the river".

In the early 1800s, the Coast Salish peoples of this area believed a mythical sea monster, who they called Qwiqwas, lived in Como Creek, which flows from Eagle Mountain into Como Lake and then into the Coquitlam River, from which the City of Coquitlam gets its name.

Coquitlam is a young and growing city with a diverse population. It is home to the Coquitlam campus of Douglas College and the David Lam campus of the University of the Fraser Valley.
